Xiaomi’s Mi 4: OnePlus One’s latest competitor?

August 5, 2014 by Omar Sohail

The expensive flagship smartphones are going to have their work cut out for them by a huge scale; thanks to the influx of disruptive mobile gadgets, which possess powerful specifications in a killer price tag. The first device that had a price tag stamped at literally half the amount that flagships such as the Galaxy S5 and the One M8 which was currently shipped with (without contract of course) was the OnePlus One. The next smartphone that is the closest adversary to the OnePlus One in terms of price and performance is Xiaomi’s latest flagship smartphone, the Mi 4. With cost effective products like the Mi 3, and the Mi Pad, you can be assured that the Mi 4 has some killer specs bundled with a killer price tag.

Technical specifications

Without boring you, here are the technical specifications of the Mi 4 smartphone.

Processor

Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 chipset

Quad core Krait processor clocked in at 2.5 GHz (The OnePlus One possesses the same chipset and the same clock speed as its closest competitor)

Memory

3 GB of RAM (The OnePlus One possesses the same amount of RAM as well).

Screen size

5 inch IPS (in plane switching) display (The OnePlus One possesses a screen size of 5.5 inches). However, both devices possess the exact same resolution. In simple terms, since the Mi 4 possesses a smaller screen size than the OnePlus One, the pixel strength of the Mi 4 is stronger than the OnePlus One. However, pixel strength happens to be the least important factor when purchasing a smartphone, since lots of users prefer using smartphones that boast a screen size that is larger than 5 inches and a resolution that is below HD level.

Wireless adapter type

So far, the Mi 4 and the One are at par with each other (except for the .5 inch difference in the screen size). Since both devices possess a wireless adapter that supports the 802.11 ac wireless standard, calling performance through the use of VoIP apps and video streaming performance will also be the same between the two devices. Since both devices possess the same amount of processing power, the performance of VoIP apps will also be the same.

Camera

Though both devices possess the same amount of megapixels in the rear camera (13 MP, taking pictures at a resolution of 4128 x 3096 pixels), the one place where the Mi 4 has surpassed the OnePlus One is the front camera. The Mi 4 possesses an 8 MP front camera while the OnePlus One possesses a 5 MP camera. Apart from that, both rear cameras have the ability to shoot 4K resolution videos.

Operating system

Since the Mi 4 was released at a later time compared to the OnePlus One, another department where the Mi 4 is able to thwart its closest rival is in the operating system.

Operating system

Mi 4

4.4.3 Kitkat (MIUI ROM)

OnePlus One

4.4.2 Kitkat (CyanogenMod ROM)

Since both companies have inserted custom ROMs in their devices, there is no way for the user to update the operating system without installing a custom ROM that has been developed over the newer version of Android (with 4.4.4 being the latest).

Other features

Given below are the few differences that you will find once you pit the devices against each other.

Bluetooth connectivity

NFC (near field communication capability)

Mi 4

4.0

Yes

OnePlus One

4.1

No

Another thing that needs to be outlined is that both devices come in the 16 GB and 64 GB storage variants, and both devices do not possess a microSD slot.

Price

Perhaps the biggest game changer in the entire battle will depend on the pricing of the devices. Given below are the separate prices of both devices according to how much internal storage they house.

Price (16 GB variant is USD)

Price (64 GB variant is USD)

Mi 4

$320

$400

One Plus One

$299

$349

Even though there is a difference of pricing between the two devices, there are a few trade-offs that you will be receiving from each device. However, as a final verdict, it cannot properly be deduced which device will be the winner here because remember, just because the price of the OnePlus One is stated as $349; it does not necessarily mean that the same price will be available in your region. In fact, thanks to duties and other charges, the price of the OnePlus One will shoot up drastically. Since Xiaomi has distributors and retailers across several regions, there will not be such a price difference when the device lands on foreign soil. OnePlus; however, is a startup company and does not possess the kind of distribution that Xiaomi does so if a person will be shipping the device to their own region, the shipment will carry a certain degree of risk with it.

Furthermore, distributors also offer warranty for Xiaomi’s products as they are Xiaomi’s official distributors. For the OnePlus; there are several agents out there who will offer a warranty period, but strict conditions will apply to those warranty terms. In addition, the mobile product will also carry a larger price tag since the agents are paying from their own pocket to ship the product to their market shelf. However, at the end of the day, it all depends on the user and what they are comfortable with.
